Solar Water Heating Systems

Fundy Solar Ltd has extensive experience installing many types of solar water heating systems. Today we deal almost exclusively in evacuated tube technology from EOS Solar. Our collectors boast superior performance in all climates including the cold Canadian winters. We use off the shelf industrial quality components for longevity and trouble free operation and ease of replacement. Every system is custom designed, taking into account the intended purpose for the system, the features of the site and the existing infrastructure.

Our evacuated tube solar collectors efficiently convert sunlight to heat for your domestic hot water. The double wall glass tube effectively eliminates conductive heat loss, concentrating heat in the heat pipe where it is transferred to a freeze-proof non-toxic mixture of propylene glycol and water. In a typical installation, the propylene glycol-water mixture is pumped to a heat exchanger attached to a solar storage tank. The heated water in the solar storage tank can be used for space heating, bathing, laundry, pool heat, industrial processes or anywhere hot water or heat is needed.

The Evacuated Tube Advantage:

  1. Superior performance in cold temperatures: Evacuated tube solar collectors have superior performance in cold temperatures and low light conditions. Our evacuated tubes are surrounded by two sheets of glass, with a vacuum in between. This effectively eliminates any heat conduction to the environment.
  2. Passive tracking: The space between evacuated tubes allows the collector to deliver 100% of its capacity through a wider portion of the day. Your material investment is utilized at 100% capacity through more of the day, this yields greater energy output at lower material cost.
  3. Simple to fix: A wayward golf ball or stone may break a tube. In the event of breakage the heat pipe and glass covering can easily be removed and replaced in a matter of minutes.

Site requirements:

Your site must have clear access to the from 9:00am to 5:00 pm.

If you have a South-Facing roof, we can mount your collectors on the roof. If not, a ground mount is possible.

Other options are pole mounts for single collectors and side of wall mounts.

We will have to install copper pipe between your collectors and utility room. The usual way to do this is for the pipe to enter your attic through your roof and follow the inside of a wall, a chase, or the back of a closet to the basement where it is attached to the ceiling. A vaulted ceiling or other architectural feature may make this impossible. In this case, the pipe may be attached to the outside of your house and then it may come in the basement wall. Installing the line-set on existing construction is sometimes the most difficult part of the installation.

You will need about a 1.5meter by 1.5 meter area of floor space for the solar storage tank. Ideally, this is close to your existing water heater but other layouts are possible.
